A very good news for all Fijians as the Fiji 7s team has been nominated for the World Breakthrough of the Year award for the 2017 Laureus World Sports Awards. For the first time ever, sports fans will have the chance to make their voices heard in a brand new Best Sporting Moment of the Year Award, which will celebrate the power of sport. The nominations also include the current English Premier League champions Leicester City who won the title last year against all the odds, The Iceland Euro 2016 soccer team, South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk who is the current world record holder, world champion and Olympic champion in the 400 metres.
The Fiji 7s team are currently the reigning champions of World Rugby Sevens Series in World Rugby.
The team also won the country’s first ever Olympic Gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil .
The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony honoring well performing individuals from the sports industry along with the greatest sporting achievements throughout the entire year.
The winners are selected by an voting process conducted by the members of the Laureus World Sports Academy and the results for the same will be revealed in Monaco on the 14th of February.
In order to end up with a Fair and Legit result, The Laureus Nominations Panel consist of professional sports editors, writers and broadcasters vote to create a shortlist of six nominations in five categories.
WORLD BREAKTHROUGH OF THE YEAR: Nico Rosberg (Germany, Formula One), Almaz Ayana (Ethiopia, athletics), Wade van Niekerk (South Africa, athletics), Leicester City English Premier League soccer team, Iceland Euro 2016 soccer team and – Fiji Olympic Games rugby sevens team.
